The Performance Review

What happens when corporate inspiration becomes a compliance mechanism?

The Performance Review is a seven-poem micro-chapbook that dissects the motivational parables, workplace metaphors, and forced-positivity scripts used to turn exhaustion into a personal failure.

Frogs are instructed to change color. Octopuses are praised for splitting themselves in eight directions. Golden geese are celebrated until their bodies stop producing. Ants, hedgehogs, mice, and bison are transformed into models of productivity, adaptability, and resilience—regardless of the biological cost.

Written from a neurodivergent perspective, these poems expose how hyperfocus, masking, fawning, and high-capacity processing are treated as “superpowers” when they generate profit, then pathologized when the nervous system inevitably collapses.

Clinical, satirical, and deliberately uncooperative, The Performance Review rejects the idea that workers must transform themselves to survive dysfunctional systems.
